SCOPE

  • Product Type: Electric Resistance Welded, Grade B pipe, black and hot-dipped galvanized.
  • Applications:
    • Mechanical and pressure applications.
    • Ordinary uses in steam, water, gas, and air lines.
    • Suitable for welding, forming, threading, flanging, grooving, and bending.
  • Standards:
    • ASTM A53/A 53M, ASME SA53 /SA53M, and ASME B36.10M.
    • UL, ULC listed for sizes 1/2” to 6” S40 for Fire Sprinkler Pipe applications.
    • FM approved 1/2” to 6” S40.
    • NSF/ANSI 372 and NSF/ANSI 61 certified for specific sizes and schedules.

MANUFACTURE

  • Weld Seam: Heat treated after welding to a minimum of 1000°F (540°C) to prevent untempered martensite.

COATINGS

  • Galvanized: Average weight of zinc coating not less than 1.8 oz. per sq. ft. (inside and outside), as per ASTM A90.
  • Black Pipe: Average thickness of black water base paint is 1 mil on the outside surface.

TESTING

  • Hydrostatic Testing: Test pressures are maintained for a minimum of 5 seconds. Pressure details for various sizes are provided below.
  • Nondestructive Electric Testing: Performed on each length of ERW pipe NPS 1/2 and larger.

TENSILE REQUIREMENTS

  • Strength: Minimum tensile strength of 60000 Psi (415 Mpa).
  • Yield Strength: Minimum yield strength of 35000 Psi (240 Mpa).
  • Chemical Composition Limits: Specified maximum percentages for Carbon, Manganese, Phosphorus, Sulfur, and trace metals.

MECHANICAL TESTS

  • Flattening Test: Conducted on NPS 1/2 and greater to check weld quality.
  • Bend Test: For pipe NPS 2 or smaller, capable of bending through 90° without cracks.

DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHTS

  • Plain End: Dimensions and weights provided for both S40 and S80 schedules across various nominal pipe sizes (NPS).
  • End Finish: Beveled or threaded ends as per standards.

PERMISSIBLE VARIATIONS

  • Wall Thickness: Minimum wall thickness at any point not more than 12.5% under the nominal specified.
  • Diameter and Weight: Tolerances for diameter and weight per foot as specified.

PRODUCT MARKING

  • Identification: Each length of pipe continuously stenciled or bar-coded with manufacturer name, pipe grade, size, length, heat number, and other relevant details.
